Shirty The Slightly Aggressive Bear was a parody of many typical children’s television programmes featuring an adult in a bear costume using over exaggerated hand gestures with a host who spoke down to the young audience in a simplistic yet condescending voice. Shirty didn't put up with this and got a tad violent if he didn’t get his own way.

The Shirty sketches had a reasonable life on The Late Show, scattered across most of the second half of the Season 1, with two sketches shown in some episodes.

In Season 1 Ep.20 Jase explains that Shirty is predominantly based on Percy the Panda, a character from the Australian children’s TV show Adventure Island created by John-Michael Howson and Godfrey Philipp. which aired on the ABC from 1967-1973. The man behind Shirty is revealed in Season 1 Ep.20 and is also featured as a hidden Easter Egg on the Champagne Edition DVD's.

Trivia

Rob played Shirty in all sketches except for the last.

All right, for those who do not have the Champagne Edition DVD's, the last episode - Shirty Unmasked - reveals Russell Crowe as his character "Hando" from "Romper Stomper" as the man in the costume. Obviously he wasn't in every episode.

Jane sang the theme song to Shirty. In Jane's words from the Champagne Edition DVD commentary "we bought two little girls in to sing the theme but kept giggling and didn't get it right"
